Minimum Industry Safety Training (MIST) Programme. The oil and gas industry is one of the most highly regulated industries in the world when it comes to safety. Certainly, in the North Sea – and in most other parts of the world – the focus on safety is massive. It is not at all unusual now for installations to operate for several months, or even one or two years without a single recordable case, let alone an incident where people lose time at work because of injury (these are known as lost time incidents or LTI’s). This is not because the recording of incidents is being discouraged; it is, in fact, the opposite. Even the most minor graze or cut finger will be recorded and the causes investigated. Statistically, you’re much safer working offshore than in many onshore industries, e.g. construction or agriculture.
